Wild Men

The twilight world of European folklore is a place where many of my interests intersect; historical, cultural, psycological, geographical. Like a blurry black and white photographcrackling old vinyl, or the patina of an object that belies generations of use, folklore speaks to us from far away. A folkloric tradition comes to us indirectly and refracted, as an artifact not only of something ancient, and often exclusively rural, but also of something very deeply rooted, yet hidden, within our collective psyche. In this way folklore can transport us back to the world of the pastoral idyll, which is really what I'm mostly interested in here.

I'm a little bit late on this one, but spotted this the other day - a collection of photographs of Charles Fréger which examine traditions of mythological transformation and celebrate the seasonal cycles of death and rebirth. My edit below, more on National Geographic here and the book here too.

Wedding Belles

You can imagine my surprise the other day when in amongst the usual utility supplier-switching letters and pizza leaflets pushed through my door was an envelope with a handwritten address on it. I don't often get real post these days, but when I do its usually from someone in my family who mostly live about 200-odd miles away. The handwriting on this one gave it away as being from my grandmother on my Dad's side, Muriel. I saw her last back in February and she was so shocked by how much I reminded her of her first husband (Dad's Dad) John, that she sent some photocopies of her lovely wedding photos to prove it. Both looking pretty glam back in 1954:

Sommerkatalog 2013

Visiting Mrs PR's folks in Cologne is always exciting, but the prospect of spending an hour or two browsing the Manufactum store there is arguably even more of a thrill. I've posted about this place before; it's a borderline spiritual shopping experience. So without repeating myself, heres my top half-dozen from their current Summer Catalogue:

From top:
Mountain rucksack
Ratchet spanner set
Wall light with switch
Papier mache suitcase
