Fall

The average temperature in London so far this month is 12ÂșC, so I'm finding myself layering up more often than not these days. Autumn has to be my favourite time of the year as far as outfit choices go. You can get away with wearing a cozy cardigan over an Oxford, or a Barbour over a flannel shirt, and be prepared for all but the most inclement weather of the season.

Over the past year or so I've unwittingly put together and fine-tuned my Autumn uniform, and I'm now just realising to my delight that I'm not really lacking any essentials. I try my best to go for design classics (think Opinel, Le Crueset) so I'm hoping to be wearing these for many seasons to come. Most of these pieces have been picked up second hand one way or another, but you can of course splash out from the likes of J. Crew, Barbour, et al.

Clockwise from top left:

LL Bean Adirondack Barn Coat. Technically this is a ladies coat, but this vintage version isn't fitted so works for skinny fellas too. Flannel lined (hunting-motif print) and monogrammed by the previous owner (RLM).

'Commando' Sweater. No labels on this one, but burning a length of yarn from it tells you its wool, not acrylic. Suede shoulder and elbow patches make it masculine, but keep it the right side of army surplus.

Wolverine Chukka Boots. Neat enough for the office, sturdy enough for the woods. Perfect.

Norse Projects Flannel 5 Panel Cap. I wear specs so wooly hats always look really strange on me. This is the next best thing.

Edwin ED-80 14oz Red Listed Selvedge Jeans. Nice and slim without looking at all like jeggings & enough clearance at the ankle to sit over the tops of your boots.

Ralph Lauren Button Down Oxford. Obviously a classic, bought second hand so already beautifully laundered & broken in.

Waffle Henley. Don't go for white, you want it to look like you found it in an abandoned mine.

Boot Socks. Must be marled and chunky.
